Just a great vacuum, not a lifestyle choice
I purchased this vacuum for home use to replace an Oreck that just didn’t hold up. For a next vacuum I wanted something that would last. After considering Dyson, Kirby, Miele, and other (expensive!) home vacuums, I hit upon the idea of buying a commercial machine. This thing is stout, with nearly all-metal construction. The suction is more than adequate, and the beater bar does a better job grooming the nap on our carpets than the Oreck did. The dual speeds come in handy for small rugs. The noise level is good – it’s much quieter than our Oreck, probably owing in part to a larger fan turning at lower RPM. My favorite thing about this vacuum is that pretty much all the parts are cheap (replacement fans are $4!) and user-replaceable (janitorial departments don’t take vacuums to the shop, I’m thinking). The crazy long cord means we only have to plug it in once per floor, which in my book more than outweighs the minor hassle of coiling it. And no pointless accessories to store. About the only downside compared to our Oreck is the weight, and it’s still manageable, even on stairs.Long story short, if you just want a simple vacuum that gets your carpets clean and will probably last forever with the occasional part replacement I think this is a great way to go. The retro 1980s good-looks are just a bonus! Will update if I experience any issues in the near future.

    On The Fence
I have to say, if they had halves, I might give it another half a star. I have only had it a few weeks and I am still on the fence about a lot of what I am experiencing with this vac. I felt I should write something as I do not feel it is really worth the 5 star rating it was given. I have been looking for two items most of my life…the perfect toaster and a great vacuum. Life is getting shorter and I have have not fulfilled either of my goals:(PROS: 1. It seems to be sucking up the dirt well but it is new. 2. The materials it is made of, seem to be very sturdy and it has a lot of metal. It has a very low profile and gets under furniture very well. 3. It flattens out to the point I can get totally under my beds. It is very heavy, but itmaneuvers easily with the ball bearing wheels.. 4. The bags are very easy to install. 5. It has a 2 year warranty. 6.. It is not made in China, 7. You can get replacement parts. 8. In my area, there are a number of places that repair Sanitaire. 8. Reasonably priced compared to many other vacuums.CONS: 1. It is very heavy and may not be suited for two story homes. If you are strong, and consider lugging a vac up the stairs a good aerobic workout.. then go for it. 2. Eats up long fringe even on the low setting. I have some smaller area hooked rugs and I have to vac on low and be very careful to keep away from the edges as they will be eaten by the vac. My rugs are mostly very low pile Keristan’s and, on these heavier rugs, it cleans them easly without a problem. 3. The 50′ cord may be good for ball rooms but I find it difficult. I will say I am working on it and I can clean most of the house with just one plug in. However, the cord is very heavy duty and it gets caught on furniture. I have to go retrieve it and so having to plug it in other places would not be that big a deal. The cord is attached separately and you couldpurchase a shorter cord if you want to spend the extra $$. I am not sure if it would need to be so heavy duty gauge, if shorter, and I would definitely call sanitaire and check. 4.My biggest concern is where the arm attaches to the base of the vacuum. It fits very loosely. I called the company and they told me this is on purpose. I imagine it is to cut down on torgue but I am still skeptical that the pin that holds the arm and base together, will not eventually snap. I have not taken it apart so I am just guessing about the inner construction. 5.The edge is very hard vinyl and I have already nicked a couple of pieces of furniture, I saw on another web site, they have a boot/bra kind of padded cloth cover you can put around it to make it softer. I would definitely get one if you have fragile or antique furniture. Of course, this is a commercial vacuumand it needs to be rugged. 5. On the low setting, it cleans my wood floors well without throwing debris around.I have an Irish Setter and a Westie and I live on a heavily planted acre. We have oaks full of Spanish moss and a lot of debris gets tracked in the house no matter how many paw wipes and shoe cleans–I vacuum a lot. I wanted a Sherman tank of a vacuum that has a disposable bag. It fits that bill for sure!! I will give it a little more time..I searched forever and this seemed to be the best I could find without selling a kidney to pay for it..UPDATE: 5/15/15 >The problem I feared has happened…the mechanism that locks the arm, in the upright position, has failed. 2. The bottom plastic cored holder keeps popping off the handle. 3. The metal plate that covers the belt and rollers fell off. I have no idea why because the metal tabs that hold the plate on seem strong. It fit so tightly that I had trouble closing them when I returned the plate to its proper position. It will be going in for repairs. However, I will start looking for another vacuum. It is really heavy and , although it does some good sucking, it has become a real chore to use it.Anybody have a great toaster??

Proven reliable design for effective vacuuming performance.
This is a well built upright with a very strong motor, an accurate, very usable height adjustment, robust wheels, and a very long heavily insulated cord. It is essentially a near copy of a very good old Hoover commercial unit we used for 42 years, nearly without failure, for its entire life. I use it for carpeted stairs too and this is where the design detail fails since as compared to the ancient Hoover, which had a “U” shaped yoke at the pivot point of the handle/hinge location to facilitate a very convenient “handle” for vacuuming stairs. I’ve designed a simple yet effective handle to accommodate this “lost” feature. It’s still hard to beat the combination of a very strong vacuum along with the rotating brush and bar for pulling everything out of the carpet.

The first one was great and why I purchased another
This is my second Sanitaire upright. The first one was great and why I purchased another. The 889A feels like I’m moving an anchor compared to my last Sanitaire. It feels much heavier than 21 pounds and will make you want to NOT vacuum. The cords it way, way to thick and stiff and has no business on a vacuum. I think much of it is the hard, thick plastic on the outside. It is not user friendly and also difficult to rewind. For some reason the height adjustment on this one is different too. I am either too low, really working the motor or too high and mostly missing the carpet. Last unit was just right. Also, this probably has something to do with the lower section of the vac becoming covered in dust very quickly. If I had it to do over again, I would choose another model.
