I am a woodworker and I like to make rolling carts for small machines so that I can make the most efficient use of my small shop space. But I also think that dust collection is very important so when I build a new cart I exploit the vertical space, between the floor and the machine, to squeeze in a vacuum cleaner.I was just about to scoot off to Dome Hippo to buy one of their honking great shop vacs when I found this excellent compact vacuum from PROLUX. I am very happy about that. Vacuum design engineers normally adopt the mind set that the device can be as large as necessary because nobody cares because they are only going to be dragging it around the floor – WRONG! This philosophy makes their product into circular drums with all sorts of junk hanging off the sides. Like we really relish the ugliness. Well the PROLUX brains actually used a bit of intelligence to break the mold and make a super compact and very nicely designed dust sucker.Although there are lots of design features that need to be catered for like handles, hose connectors, battery compartments and other things, they did a very clever job of making the overall shape compact and sort of rectangular. Not only does it make it not ugly but also very economical in its demands for space. I will be able to have lots of design freedom when I slot this baby into the new cart that I am designing for my new 4 inch belt sander. This cart is going to be seriously sweet because the PROLUX team did such a nice job.The overall look is black/very dark gray but there are areas of bright yellow, mostly to guide you to places where your fingers can do something useful. The funny thing is that the owner’s manual has a funny cartoon on the front page that encourages you to read the owners manual but I found that the design was so intuitive that I figured everything out in a matter of moments and just used the guide as a reassurance. The battery was at least half charged so that I could immediately experiment, but I had it charging in seconds with the supplied charger. If you want a vacuum cleaner for something slightly different from the usual house cleaning job this could be just what you are looking for. I am very pleased with my PROLUX cleaner.

Was looking for a little “shop vac” or at least something portable I could use to clean my car interior. For that, it definitely works well enough.Build quality is pretty sturdy, overall has a bit of heft, mainly thanks to the fairly large capacity battery. However, it’s not heavy enough to stop the vac dragging or tipping when pulling on the hose.Assembly is pretty easy, just make sure to orient and align the grey hose clips before you press down firmly.Decent selection of useful attachments and I like the brush bristles.Where I feel the unit loses a star is with its power, or lack of. Please note: I started by charging the battery to max capacity.Speaking of batteries, there’s only 1 and at this price point I’d kinda hope for a 2nd. No idea where to buy a spare from. Squeezing the yellow latch on the battery shows you the current capacity, which is pretty handy. My initial test was using the blower function to help clean up some old weights that were covered in sawdust. Struggled to move the dust to be honest. I wouldn’t buy this for the blower function.Suction is pretty weak in Low mode but usable in High mode. With the brush attachment I was able to clean the weights to some extent and also clean the floor mats in my car. This is where I was happier: the entire unit easily fits in the car footwells and I could move around inside the car vacuuming pretty easily. On low and high mode it was picking up dust from the floor mats nicely. End result: clean interior! It crossed my mind that suction might be stronger without the HEPA filter (nice feature!) BUT the manual (that I actually read) warns against running the vac without the filter in place. The only time the suction feels really strong is with the thin nozzle attachment, and then it’s pretty decent. Maybe if the brush head bristles were shorter, it wouldn’t lose so much suction..?The other main feature is as wet vac, which I haven’t had reason to try yet. Honestly, I hope that it’s really good in that function because that seems to be the only difference between this and a more affordable basic shop vac.Overall, I’m glad I’ve got it but, had I paid full price for this, I’d have mixed feelings.

I have been using a pretty powerful shop vac in my garage woodshop. I have a 2hp dust collection system that takes most of the sawdust in. There is always a lot left, especially from my 12″ sliding compound miter saw. Miter saws make a mess, even with the dust collector attached.Because of all this un-collected sawdust, I’ve used and pull around a big 16 gallon orange shop vac. The wheels often have a hard time rolling over the control joint lines. Because the shop vac is so big, it often tips over when I’m vacuuming. I really despise that. Additionally, if any parts are attached, they often come off too.The hose is so inflexible that I have to vacuum with the hose fairly straight. It’s hard to vacuum in several places in my garage with this inflexible hose. I often have to get on my hands and knees with a shop broom to sweep up the dirt that I can’t get with this vacuum. The reason I say all this is because these problems no longer exist in my shop. With the little 3 gallon cordless travel Prolux vacuum, I can get anywhere. The hose is so flexible that I was able to coil it as small as my hands could hold it. The hose is also very stretchy. It looks short, but as soon as it’s pulled on, it lengthens quite easily.I was surprised by the suction power of the vacuum because it is so small. It has lower CFM than many other vacs, but in its size and class, this one competes nicely with the rest of them. The Prolux is so light and maneuverable, and it rolls right over the expansion cracks very easily. With all the attachments, a 4000 Ah battery, good suction, a two year warranty on the unit itself and three years on the motor, all built and Headquartered in the Beehive State of Utah, you can’t go wrong.
