This machine is a powerhouse when it comes to tackling pet hair, stains, and odors.
With six dogs in the house, finding a carpet cleaner that truly does the job has been a challenge, but the Hoover PowerScrub XL Pet Carpet Cleaner is by far the best we’ve ever had! This machine is a powerhouse when it comes to tackling pet hair, stains, and odors. It’s incredibly easy to use and maneuvers well, making cleaning large areas a breeze. The powerful suction and deep-cleaning brushes leave our carpets looking fresh and feeling clean. Plus, the tank capacity is generous, so I don’t have to keep stopping to refill or empty it. If you have pets and need a reliable, high-performance carpet cleaner, this is definitely the one to get!

    Cleans without oversoaking carpet
The first thing that impressed me was I was able to do an entire room and hallway and there was still some water left in the gallon tank and it did not dispense all of the cleaning solution unlike the bissells I owned where they went through tons of cleaning solution. This machine does a very good job of mixing and dispensing just enough solution to properly clean without over soaking the carpet. After shampooing my carpet, I left to run some errands and when I returned home 4 hours later the carpet was already almost completely dry to the touch. The machine is very easy to clean and the action of the brushes and the suction power did an amazing job cleaning my carpet. I have used this machine only once so far so we will see how it goes after using it a couple times.I say this because in the Last 5 Years I purchased three different models of Bissell shampooers and they all failed after the third use. One of the units the suction really degraded on one of the others the handheld wand stopped spraying solution and was very sporadic. I will never ever buy a Bissell shampooer ever again! My third Bissell failed when attempting to clean up a spot after my dog threw up and of course the main floor unit would not dispense water or cleaner. I saw this Hoover on Amazon and read the reviews so I thought I would give it a try.So far, after one use I am very pleased with its performance I know this is a different brand however, I have been burned so badly by Bissell units where they failed after the third use that it has made me a little gun shy when it comes to carpet shampooers.

Does the job (but, far from perfect)
I dithered between this version (XL Pet), the cheaper Powerscrub XL versions and a couple pretty compelling Bissell products in same price range. Hoover seems to deliberately obfuscate which features are in each model or they have no clue what is important to customers but after returning a much cheaper version of the Powerscrub line that ended up not having a feature I value that the more expensive models have I settled on the XL Pet vs the more powerful Bissells because of separate soap container and relatively large recovery tank on the Hoover vs Bissell. After going through 3 full tanks here are my pros/cons:Pro:- I do like the relatively big recovery tank which is consistently full just prior to clean tank being empty. Clean tank holds 4.25 qts. Recovery tank 3.25 qts. In my 3 refills there were 1 to 1.5 pints remaining in clean tank when rectory tank became full. This was on the “deep clean” setting.- carpet was dry on top in half an hour but more like 60-90 minutes to become dry. This at 40% humidity and ceiling fans running at 3/4 speed.- suction seems strong enough. It certainly pulled a whole lot of grit and grime out of carpet that is regularly vacuumed with high quality vacuum cleaner in a home that doesn’t allow shoes indoors. It leaves about 3/4 qts solution behind for every 4 qts applied.- I strongly wanted a model with soap solution separate from clean water tank but as far as I can tell, to do a rinse only pass you must remove the little cleaner tank. Not a big deal to do. After 25 years of cleaning up pet and kid messes I’ve never felt the need for a rinse pass but I love the idea of easily doing such a pass.- ergonomics are okay. Considering it has about 8 lbs of liquid aboard I’d say it is moderate in total weight and the suction force/brushes provide noticeable resistance to overcome. After a couple hours of using it I was ready for a break (but I’m nearly 70 years old).- pretty easy to clean the machine after use but I don’t have long haired pets. I do like the vertical brush system except that carpet fibers need to be combed out of the brushes- an old toothbrush works pretty well for that.- it uses 3 plus ounces of solution per tank of water when set to “deep clean”. Hard to say exactly because I only had the 6 oz sample that came with the machine and didn’t realize until after the 3rd tank that it doesn’t use the last 2 ozs of cleaner in the cleaning solution tank. I suspect is closer to 4 ozs than 3 on deep clean setting. Cleaner tank holds about 12 ozs of solution.- it isn’t quiet but I never felt need to wear hearing protection. After the second tank it developed a high pitched whine that I’m assuming is due to my not getting a tank perfectly seated.Con:- I’ve never owned Hoover in the past but everything about Hoover from the product descriptions to the manual/directions to the website to the machine itself screams lack of customer focus. Not unhappy with the machine but I have serious doubts about what kind of support I’ll get if something goes wrong.- there are plenty of reviews mentioning leaks and I can see why. I haven’t experienced a leakage problem but you do have to be attentive when installing any of the tanks. They aren’t bad but aren’t great to get aligned and snapped properly into place.- the directions are borderline bad and the single sheet paper directions give you a URL for additional help but reality is it sends you to oblivion courtesy of the Hoover website. There is so much more to doing a decent job of carpet cleaning than just pushing the cleaner back and forth across the carpet but Hoover is strangely silent on the topic.Random thoughts:- I’ve had a Bissell spot cleaner for 25 years that has served us well but needs a simple gasket that Bissell no longer supports. This is my first push model and I nearly purchased a model that automatically applied solution (I.e. no trigger to manage). Now with only a few hours of experience I’m very sure the automatic models are a very bad idea! You very much want control of how much and when solution is applied.- I do like the single row of vertical brushes this model has. The brushes turn off when handle is latched fully vertical so they don’t wreck your carpet while using the hose and spot clean attachments. The brushes also power down under heavy load which I think I like again from perspective of damage. Brushes have the ability to float up and down automatically and I’m thinking that you really don’t want aggressive scrub action. My carpet is pretty short but relatively dense if that matters for this review.- the difference in price between pet and non-pet versions was very small so I bought the pet version however the pet focused attachment is completely worthless. The basic (non pet) attachment works pretty well.- accessory hose fluid supply line requires priming and buried in the directions is a comment and directions on how to do it.- recovery tank full indicator is very effective with a loud “pop” noise, visual confirmation and immediate loss of suction.- we have a lot of carpet and while one could conceivably do entire house with this machine it isn’t really designed for that and would be punishing physically. It’s more for periodic touch up of heavily trafficked areas and cleaning up after pets and kids. My Bissell spot cleaner works really well on messes but I have to say this machine is very much easier and quicker on floor messes though about twice as expensive as a good spot cleaner. Carpet cleaning services around here are shockingly expensive and when I decide to tackle all the carpets I think commercial rental machines are the only way to go. They seem to rent for about $40 per day around here, likely will be Hoover or Bissell commercial models and cost for 128ozs of Hoover general cleaning solution from Amazon is a bit over $20.

I AM NOT INTO LEAVING FEED BACKS BUT THIS TIME I HAPPILY DO SO.I DREADED REPLACING OUR APPR. 25 YEAR OLD HOVER CARPET CLEANER BECAUSE THESE DAYS COMPANIES ARE BUILDING SUCH GARBAGE. MY NEW MAYTAG WASHER IS A PIECE OF JUNK AND THE SERVICE IS A BAD AS IT CAN GET :O( THE SAME WITH THE LAST SHARK UPRIGHT CARPET CLEANER, USED TO BE AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT. I REPLACED WITH A HOOVER UPRIGHT AND AM QUIET HAPPY WITH IT.THANK YOU TO THE HOOVER COMPANY FOR EVEN IMPROVING ON WHAT WAS ALREADY AN EXCELLENT CARPET CLEANER. THIS NEW ONE IS SLEEKER, JUST AS POWERFUL, EASIER TO EMPTY, THE DIRTY TANK POP UP IS EASY TO HEAR WHEN THE TANK IS FULL, THE CORD IS LONG, ALL GOOD!HERE IS A PIECE OF ADVICE FOR YOU. AFTER WORKED WITH MANY CARPET CLEANERS OVER THE YEARS, SOME HOUSEHOLD, SOME INDUSTRIAL, AS I AM A RETIRED PROFESSIONAL HEAD HOUSE KEEPER IN THE HOTEL INDUSTRY, I CAN TELL YOU THAT HEAVY IS GOOD. THE HEAVIER THE MACHINE, THE DRIER TO CARPET. THE WEIGHT IS NEEDED WHEN REMOVING THE MOISTURE. THIS NEW MACHINE IS A BIT LIGHTER IN WEIGHT COMPARED TO MY OLD ONE, HOWEVER, THERE IS A LITTLE TRICK. BEFORE YOU START TO RINSE YOUR CARPET WITH CLEAN WATER, DON’T EMPTY THE BOTTOM (DIRTY WATER) TANK BUT LEAVE IT HALF FULL. THIS WILL ADD WEIGHT TO THE BOTTOM PART OF THE MACHINE WHICH IN TURN WILL GET MORE WATER/MOISTURE OUT OF THE CARPET WHICH SHOULD BE ALMOST DRY TO THE TOUCH.MOVE THE MACHINE OVER THE CARPET AS SLOW AS YOU CAN, THE SLOWER THE BETTER AS IT GIVES THE MACHINE THE EXTRA TIME TO REMOVE MOISTURE. WATCH THE TOP OF THE LOWER TANK FOR THE POINT WHEN NO WATER IS MOVING THROUGH. THE MACHINE LEFT MY CARPETS AS GOOD AS DRY JUST LIKE MY OLD ONE DID, BUT I DID HAVE TO GO BACK AND FORTH A BIT SLOWER THAT BEFORE AS THIS NEW MACHINE IS A BIT LIGHTER AND AS I SAID, LEAVE WATER IN THE BOTTOM TANK FOR WEIGHT.OUR HOUSE IS 80 % CARPET OR AREA RUGS SO i JUST FINISHED OUR LARGE LIVING ROOM AND THE DINING ROOM AREA RUG. AMAZING IS ALL I CAN SAY!!! DID NOT NEED A BOOKLET TO GET STARTED :O), THE TANKS POP IN EASILY, ALSO, WHEN THE TOP ONE WITH THE CLEAN WATER WAS EMPTY, THE BOTTOM ONE WAS FULL AT THE SAME TIME. HANDY! CARPETS LOOK LIKE NEW!!!THE CLEANUP WAS FAST TOO AS THE TANKS ARE SMOOTH INSIDE, NOT A LOT OF NOOKS AND GRANNIES FOR STUFF TO SETTLE IN. ANOTHER GREAT IMPROVEMENT IS THAT THE NOZZLE PART POPS OUT EASILY FOR RINSING, VERY NICE!YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE THE CLEANING FORMULA, YOU CAN ALSO FILL THE LITTLE TANK WITH WATER INSTEAD AND ADD THE FORMULA TO THE FRESH WATER TANK DIRECTLY. FOR RINSING THE CARPET JUST FILL THE LARGE WATER TANK WITH FRESH CLEAN WATER. I USE A COMMERCIAL CARPET CLEANER AND ADD IT TO THE HOT WATER TANK FOREGOING THE LITTLE FORMULA TANK. THIS WAY I CAN CHOOSE MORE FOR DIRTIER CARPETS AND LESS FOR CLEANER CARPETS.LASTLY, I DID NOTICE THAT FOR SOME REASON WITH THIS MACHINE I DID NOT NEED THE ‘DEFOAMER’ WHICH I HAD TO ADD TO THE BOTTOM DIRTY WATER TANK WITH THE OLD MACHINE. BECAUSE OF THE FOAM I HAD TO EMPTY THE TANK SO OFTEN OR ELSE USE A SHOT OF DEFOAMER. NOW I DON’T HAVE TO ANY LONGER.I AM HAPPY, HOPE IT LASTS AS LONG AS THE OLD ONE :O)

I looked at this item and it seemed to do everything I wanted, except work in Australia. There was no warning or information that it was not suitable for overseas use, so I purchased it. When I tried to use it the first time it tripped all the circuit breakers in my home. I was advised to return it, at a cost of over $200 postage!! Will not be buying mains powered electrical devices through Amazon ever again. Totally unsatisfactory that they ship items to countries which are not compatible with their appliances, then expect the consumer to foot the bill for returning the item.

Overall a great unit, it well exceeded my expectations for getting dirt out, and I recommend.Setup was fairly easy but I had difficulty priming the water/cleaning fluid the first time and had to tilt the machine sideways before feeder tubes filled.A lot of water went into the carpet very light use of the applicator trigger is recommended until used to the machine. I took several pickup passes to get to just a damp to touch.A carpet that is cleaned regularly gave up a lot of dirt – I was really pleased with the final result. The hand units do good jobs on couches, cushions, and mattresses.Everything on this unit is plastic, bangs and bumps should be avoided. Cleanup takes a while and is necessary, there are a lot of corners in the tank and around the cleaning head. This will get soured really fast if not kept clean.
